Distance education is a kind of education in which the teacher and student are physically separated. The distance education mainly focuses on the disabled students to facilitate their education from their home and nontraditional students such as full time workers, military personnel and nonresidents or individuals in remote region who can't attend the class room. However the distance education is a part educational world. Distance education available in Higher Secondary Education, Degree and Post Graduation while a number of universities provide distance education opportunities for students.
In Kerala, the University of started the distance education as the pioneer of distant learning in 1976. The university's distance education has got approval from Distance Education Bureau(DEB).
Kerala State Open School (KSOS): KSOS is an initiative of the Kerala government that aims to provide education to people who could not complete their formal schooling. KSOS offers courses from Class 9 to 12 through distance learning mode.
Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS): SSUS offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma courses in Sanskrit and other traditional Indian knowledge systems through distance education mode.
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU): IGNOU is a national-level open university that offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate courses in various fields through distance learning mode. IGNOU has several study centers in Kerala.
University of Calicut: The University of Calicut offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate courses through its School of Distance Education. The courses are designed to cater to the needs of working professionals and students who are unable to attend regular classes.
Malayalam University: The Malayalam University offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Malayalam language and literature through distance learning mode. The courses are designed to promote the study of Malayalam language and literature and to preserve the cultural heritage of Kerala.
