Alappuzha
Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a coastal district in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The district is known for its backwaters, beaches, and lagoons. Here is a brief history of Alappuzha district:
The region came under the rule of the Kulashekhara dynasty, which was a major power in Kerala at the time. The Kulashekharas were followed by the kingdom of Venad, which ruled over the region till the arrival of the Europeans.
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in the region in the late 15th century. They established a trading post in Kochi and had some influence in Alappuzha as well.
Later the region came under the control of the Travancore kingdom, which was a major power in southern India at the time. The British East India Company established a trading post in Alappuzha in the early 19th century.
The modern district of Alappuzha was formed in 1957 by merging several smaller administrative units. Today, the district is known for its tourism industry, which is based on the backwaters, beaches, and traditional boat races.
Overall, Alappuzha has a rich history that reflects the influence of various dynasties and foreign powers that have shaped the region over the centuries.
