Kottayam district is a district in the state of Kerala, India. It is located in the southwestern part of the state, and is bordered by the districts of Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam. The district has a population of 1974551, as per the 2011 census. The district headquarters is located in the town of Kottayam, which is also the most populous town in the district.
The district is renowned for its plantations, mainly of rubber. The major industries in the district are rubber processing and tourism.
Kottayam district in Kerala is home to several universities. The One Of The most famous among them is Mahatma Gandhi University.
Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) is the largest university in the district and was established in 1983. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in various disciplines such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Computer Applications, Engineering, Management, and Law. The university also has an excellent research center and offers various short-term courses.
